KABUL, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan Ministry of Public Health on Sunday confirmed 279 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of patients in the country to 32,951.
A total of 592 tests were conducted within the past 24 hours, and 279 were positive in 14 provinces out of 34 Afghan provinces, the ministry said in a statement.
Thirty-eight patients died within the period, taking the death toll to 864, the statement added.
The total number of people having recovered from the virus reached 19,366 after 202 new recoveries were recorded since early Saturday.
The latest daily increase comes as the country has been facing shortage of COVID-19 testing kits for long.
Local health experts believe that the actual number of infections could be much higher than the official figures as scores of patients did not visit hospitals and there was no system to register them.
