BEIJING, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

CAIRO -- Egypt reported on Sunday 167 new COVID-19 cases, the lowest daily figure since April 22, raising the total cases registered in the country to 94,483, said the Health Ministry.

Meanwhile, 31 patients died from the novel coronavirus on the same day, bringing the death toll to 4,865, while 1,318 others were cured and discharged from hospitals, increasing the total recoveries to 42,455, the ministry's spokesman Khaled Megahed said in a statement.

CAIRO -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases exceeded 309,000 in Iran on Sunday. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's tally nudges 279,000.

Iran, the hardest-hit country in the Middle East region, reported 2,685 new cases, bringing the total number of infections to 309,437.

Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education, said that the pandemic has so far claimed 17,190 lives in Iran, up by 208 in the past 24 hours. Besides, 268,102 have recovered and been discharged from hospitals while 4,089 remain in critical condition.

Saudi Arabia announced 1,357 new cases and 30 more deaths, raising the tally of confirmed cases to 278,835 and the death toll to 2,917.

The kingdom also reported 2,533 more recovered patients, taking the total recoveries to 240,081.

SANTIAGO -- Chile on Sunday reported a total of 359,731 people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and 9,608 have died of the disease.

According to the Health Ministry daily report, in the previous 24 hours, tests detected 2,081 new cases of infection and 75 more patients died.

MANILA -- Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte approved on Sunday night the recommendation of his Cabinet to impose stricter lockdown rules in Metro Manila and the neighboring provinces following the surge of COVID-19 cases in the last four days, his spokesperson Harry Roque said.

The lockdown will start midnight of Aug. 4 and last until Aug. 18.

DOHA -- The Qatari Health Ministry on Sunday announced 196 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Gulf state to 111,107, official Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.

Meanwhile, 201 more recovered from the virus, bringing the total recoveries to 107,779, while the death toll increased by three to 177, according to a ministry statement quoted by QNA.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 313 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 52,825.

Of the new cases, five are imported cases, one is community cases and the rest are linked with the dormitories of foreign workers.

The new cases are linked to known clusters.

RAMALLAH -- Palestine on Sunday announced that 255 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the West Bank, bringing the total cases to 15,780.

Palestinian Health Ministry said that a 58-year-old woman, from the refugee camp of Qalandiya, died of the virus, which brings the total fatalities resulting from the novel coronavirus to 87.
